Punches can come from a biometric device, a mobile app, a web check-in or a gate reader. The harder problem is what happens next: matching a punch to the right shift, deciding whether a late arrival is within grace, deducting an unpaid break, and handling the person who forgot to punch out.
Why it is stamped, not recomputed
Whether someone was late depends on the shift and policy that applied on that day. If those rules later change, recomputing history would silently rewrite the past. Well-built systems record the outcome at the moment of the punch — the late minutes, the applicable shift — so a register from six months ago still reads the way it did then.
