GLOSSARY DEALER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

What is a dealer management system (DMS)?

A dealer management system runs the relationship between a manufacturer and its dealer network — orders, stock, claims and performance.

A dealer management system, or DMS, is the software a manufacturer or distributor uses to run its dealer network: onboarding dealers, taking their orders, tracking what they hold, settling claims and incentives, and measuring how each one performs.

The problem it solves

A dealer network is a set of independent businesses selling your product. You do not control their systems, and they have no obligation to give you visibility. Without a shared system, a manufacturer learns what is happening in the channel weeks late, from figures the dealer chose to report.

What it usually covers

Claims are where trust is won or lost

Incentive and warranty claims are the most disputed part of most dealer relationships, because they involve money and interpretation. A system that shows a dealer the scheme rules, what they have claimed, and exactly why something was rejected removes most of that friction — not by being generous but by being legible.
