GLOSSARY CRM

What is a CRM (Customer Relationship Management system)?

A CRM keeps every interaction with a customer or prospect in one place, so the relationship survives changes of salesperson.

A CRM, or Customer Relationship Management system, holds the record of an organisation's relationships with customers and prospects: who they are, what has been discussed, what was promised, and what stage a deal has reached.

What it organises

The problem it actually solves

Relationships kept in a salesperson's memory and inbox leave with the salesperson. A CRM's real job is continuity: whoever picks up the account can see what was said and what was committed. Reporting is a consequence of that, not the point of it.

Why adoption fails

A CRM only reports well if it is filled in honestly, and it is filled in honestly only when it saves the person entering the data some effort. Systems that feel purely like surveillance get minimal entries and produce confident, useless forecasts.
